A stoneage weapon



The hook-end of a propulsor from Kesslerloch/Schaffhausen/Swiss When the spanish army entered America about 500 years ago, they had rather soon contact with a weapon called Atlatl. The Atlatl is a tool used to send spears on a long distance journey.
The common name for this tool is propulsor and it is a weapon of unknown age, but it's found it's distribution all around the world.It's used by the native inhabitants of arctic regions as well as the aboriginal population of Australia. The propulsor is still in use for hunting purposes.The oldest specimen known by archaeologists are about 20'000 years old. In archaeological termini this time is called Magdalenien here in Europe.

At the present time, the propulsor is undergoing a revival, due to some palenosed folks from Europe and the US, who discovered the highly entertaining value of this weapon.
Posing in front of the roman fortifications of Aleschia... This revival began in 1987 with a barbeque party in cologne, 1999 saw 300 participants of the european championship. The competition consists of 30 different targets at unknown distances. The reglement can be seen at Pascal Chavaux's homepage.
Distances of 8 to 30 meters as well as the terrain can be seen as equal to hunting conditions.

Major requisits for this sport are body control, concentration and craftsmanship. With skill and knowledge you can turn a sapling to a spear, a bone and a branch are turned into a propulsor.
